Stenton Pond Phase 1
The community council received a grant from the Tullis Russell Group so that we could do some environmental work in our ward area. Early photographs show the pond with no pollution; however, in recent years, it has become polluted with sewage and algae. The pond has had pollution issues for several years, and it was made an action point in the Fife Biodiversity Report Version 4 (2013-2018). The suggestion in that report was to clear around one-third of the vegetation from the wetlands annually.
In February 2020, officials from the Pitteuchar, Stenton and Finglassie community council met with representatives from Fife Council, Fife Ranger Service and Fife Environmental Trust to discuss the condition of Stenton Pond and its surrounding area. It was agreed that the community council would address the issue, but the project should be split into several phases, with phase 1 creating a new path on the north side of the pond. Unfortunately, the week after our first meeting, the COVID pandemic and lockdown hit, so all work was delayed until 2022.
There was no path on the north side of the pond, and in places the ground was waterlogged, which made it difficult for walkers to walk on that side of the pond. Phase 1 was to create a new path on the north side of the pond. We created two field drains and a new path that is wide enough to let disabled people use mobility scooters on the path. The result has been opening the northern side of the path to the public, and there have been various messages of support on Facebook complimenting us on the work.
In addition to creating the new path, we arranged for the existing bridge at the eastern end of the pond to be refurbished, with some broken spars being replaced and the bridge has now been painted. A new walking area has also been created at the western end of the pond by Fife Council ground staff.
